Today is September 11, 2011

Helvetica .... just for fun ..... clean and simple ....

Today is an exhausting day. Exhausting on an emotional level. Exhausting on a physical level for all the many across the nation participating in any (sometimes several) of the many remembrances.

"Courage lies in every man's heart" There comes a time when we each may be called upon to use the courage that may lie dormant within us .... [loosely from Vice President Joe Biden]

Ten years ago I was happily, hopefully beginning a new chapter in my life. The destruction of the twin towers along with the attack on the Pentagon, and the downing of Flight 93, instantly, changed my expectations for the future. My vision of a secure future for my children seemed naive. Peace at home no longer could be taken for granted. We were (and are) vulnerable in the same way as other countries around the world.

We have always been vulnerable. Life seemed so much easier before we came to recognize this truth. Sometimes .... Ignorance Really is Bliss ....

"Super"

As is often the case with so-called comedies. This film is not funny. It hits too close to home for too many.

Does the end always justify the means?

The film, "Super" is not for the faint of heart. More blood, gore, and gratuitous violence than I've seen lately, along with several variations on the theme of rape. There is hope and love; or maybe, just hope for love.

To paraphrase -
I thought you said we aren't ready.
 No one is ever ready.
 You just have to do.

And in the end, it's really okay when things don't end up exactly as planned.

"The Adjustment Bureau"

The film, The Adjustment Bureau.

Free Will vs Destiny (as determined by some outside force)

Trouble With Layout

For some unknown reason there are blank spaces where there were once AdSense Ads. I am not sure just how to fix it.

Time Out

News, mostly bad, assaults my senses all day, every day. Natural disasters, man-made disasters, disease, pestilence, and crime compete for my attention. After awhile it becomes impossible not to become overwhelmed by the steady onslaught.

My granddad, a news junkie who relied mostly on the radio and newspapers, routinely declared one day a week to be a no-news day ... turning the radio off and not reading the newspaper.

Time for my own time-out. Time to turn off the radio, television, iPod, cell phone, and laptop. Time to listen to music, go out to a movie, or perhaps, read one of the books I've set aside until now.

Mother Nature Always Wins

I'm not sure what to make of the events of the last few days, let alone the last few years.

We, human beings, are an arrogant lot. We assume we can control our environment, bending nature to suit ourselves.

The recent earthquakes, aftershocks, tsunamis, and nuclear plant malfunctions seem to say otherwise.

Mother Nature always wins in the end.

A Pink Martini New Year's Eve

The drive to Portland proved to be uneventful despite very cold temperatures. The lack of precipitation kept ice from forming on the roadways.

Picked up our Will Call tickets  at about 9 pm and crossed the street to the ArtBar & Bistro, a marvelous establishment open two hours before each performance at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall .We enjoyed the atmosphere in beautiful surroundings while consuming macaroni and cheese, a delightful vegetarian quiche, and then a scrumptious chocolate cinnamon ice cream with a snicker doodle cookie.

From our table, we could see the "backside" of a very unusual chair

Okay, here is the front of this highly unusual chair -

And a view of the room from the chair

And we begin -
